You've likely read or heard us talk about our unique, award-winning energy-saving technology, but what is the difference between Thermacore™ and EnergySense® hot tubs?
In simple terms, both are smart innovations designed to help you use less energy and save on running costs, just with different insulation approaches.

What is a Lay-Z-Spa Thermacore™ hot tub?
ThermaCore™ is the name of the construction and energy-saving technology of rigid foam‑sided Lay‑Z‑Spa hot tubs, such as the Toronto, Carrara and Oslo AirJet™.
Instead of being inflatable, these hot tubs have rigid thermal foam panels that slot a TriTech® outer liner. The insulating lid is still inflatable but sits inside a top cover with a layer of EnergySense® insulation.
Thermacore™ hot tubs provide greater stability and firm sides and, compared to regular inflatable hot tubs, offer superior heat retaining properties - up to 63% more energy efficiency.
What is a Lay-Z-Spa EnergySense® hot tub?
EnergySense® hot tubs take a slightly different approach. They are still inflatable but come with an integrated thermal layer inside the inflatable liner.
EnergySense® is a one-of-a-kind and totally pioneering construction method for inflatable hot tubs. The insulating layer is part of the actual hot tub liner. Simply inflate, which takes a couple of minutes, and it is done.
This integrated thermal layer helps keep water warmer for longer and reduces the amount of energy your pump uses to maintain temperature. EnergySense® hot tubs are up to 58% more energy efficient than regular inflatable hot tubs.
How does Thermacore™ compare against EnergySense®?
ThermaCore™ | EnergySense® | |
Insulation type |
Rigid insulting foam panels that make up the main construction of the hot tub | A layer of synthetic fibre is integrated inside the inflatable liner |
Energy-efficiency (Compared to standard PVC inflatable hot tubs) |
Up to 63% more energy efficient | Up to 58% more energy efficient |
Setup | Thermal foam panels slot into a TriTech® liner, which is then zipped up | Simply inflate the hot tub |
Feels like | Firm & rigid sides | Soft & cushioned, just like any other inflatable |

Which type of hot tub is better?
Both types of Lay-Z-Spa have been designed to be more energy-efficient than standard hot tubs, helping you enjoy your hot tub more often, even all year long, without worrying as much about running costs.
Now you know, the type of energy-efficient Lay-Z-Spa you choose is down to personal preferences. Currently, the range of EnergySense® hot tubs is more diverse than the range of Thermacore™ hot tubs - but more will come in time.
