Community Stories: Sciatica Relief

Maria Ioannou and her husband enjoy their Maldives HydroJet Pro™ as a place to relax. The pair love to use their hot tub at the weekends as a treat but also as a remedy. Maria suffers from sciatica and her husband experiences lower back pain. One of the main pieces of advice for sciatica is to keep moving and perform low-impact exercises. Sometimes this isn’t always possible and you can opt for heat treatment instead.

Hot Tub Hydrotherapy For Sciatica

Maria has suffered with sciatica for many years which flares up from time to time. She often experiences pain down her back and left leg. Sciatica is caused by irritation, inflammation or compression of the sciatic nerve that runs from the lower back to the feet. It can cause a tingling, burning or stabbing pain that can be worse when moving.

Hot tubs, especially ones with jets like our HydroJet hot tubs, are beneficial to soothing sciatica. The heat of the water and massaging properties of the HydroJets can help loosen muscles and relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve. The Lay-Z-Spa HydroJet nozzles are adjustable so you can make them target any part of the body. The vibration caused by the jets on the part of the body most affected by sciatica will amplify the effect the warmth is having.

Maria finds the hot tub very therapeutic. It helps her feels very relaxed and also helps her feel sleepy and ready for bed. Sciatica sufferers can experience discomfort or constant pain when lying in certain positions, so going to bed is sometimes not something to look forward to. Maria also has a spa bath in her house but says the Lay-Z-Spa is much better for relaxing and a better relief for sciatica.

Hot Tub Wellbeing Benefits

On top of using her Lay-Z-Spa for sciatica relief, Maria says it helped when she had Covid too. When she had Covid, Maria explained that she was experiencing shortness of breath but using the hot tub helped alleviate this symptom.

Top Tip: Mineral-rich Sea Salts are great to help alleviate nerve pain. Being rich in Magnesium, a property that helps get rid of pain, Dead Sea Salts are a great addition to your Lay-Z-Spa when used to soothe pain caused by sciatica.

Always consult a doctor or physio before using a hot tub as a treatment for sciatica
